On February 22, 2026, a memorial ceremony was held in Basel, Switzerland, on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide. The event was organized by the “Friends of Azerbaijan” Union, with the support of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the participation of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Swiss Confederation, at the Theodors Church. The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Swiss Confederation, Mr. Fuad Isgandarov, stated that the Khojaly genocide is one of the most terrible tragedies that has left an indelible mark on the memory of the Azerbaijani people. Noting that he is a veteran of the First Karabakh War, the ambassador emphasized that he was in the city of Aghdam on February 26, 1992 and personally witnessed the events that took place. He drew attention to the fact that 613 people were killed with special cruelty just because they were Azerbaijanis, and noted that this crime was a grave tragedy committed against humanity.
The Ambassador also stated that the Khojaly martyrs had been avenged, expressing his confidence that their souls had found peace in Khojaly, which had been liberated from occupation and has rapidly being rebuilt.
