Delegation of the Jewish community of Switzerland met with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan
A delegation led by Mr. Herbert Winter, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Switzerland visited Azerbaijan from 5 to 8 September 2016. During the visit the delegation met with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. IlhamAliyev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, Vice-Chairperson of Milli Majlis Mrs. Bahar Muradova, Chairman of the State Committee for the Work with Religious Communities Mr. Mubariz Gurbanli, Vice-Chairman of the Caucasus Muslim Board Mr. Rashad Aliyarli, Ambassadors of Switzerland and Israel to Azerbaijan, representatives of various Jewish communities in Azerbaijan. The delegation also visited Guba region as well as a number of Jewish religious, cultural and educational centres. At the meeting, the visitors were informed about the long history of multiculturalism of Azerbaijan, centuries-long peaceful and friendly co-existence of different religious and ethnic communities, the important role played by the Jewish community in the country. A broad exchange of views was held on Azerbaijani-Swiss bilateral relations and on how the Swiss Jewish community could contribute to the development of these bilateral relations. The delegation of the Swiss Jews shared their positive impression of the development they observed in Azerbaijan, and particularly of what they saw as regards friendly co-existence of people with different cultural and religious background. They stressed that model of Azerbaijan, as a country with strong religious tolerance could be an example for the world.
